Yubotp

Yubotp is a Slack application that will validate Yubico OTPs that are sent in a message.

Have you ever accidentally brushed your hand against the YubiKey in your laptop and saw it type a bunch of characters in the Slack message box? Have you ever seen that happen to one of your colleagues/friends and felt the urge to make fun of them? Now you don’t have to! Thanks to Yubotp it will all happen automatically. All you have to do is install the application, add a few witty remarks in the configuration file and wait for your next victim.

Setup

This is not a multi-tenant application so you will have to manually run it somewhere and configure it in your Slack Workspace.

Slack Setup

Start by creating a new app, choose a name and your Workspace. Record the Signing Secret in the Basic Information menu.

Add a bot user, give it a display name and a default username.

Go to OAuth & Permissions and install the App to the Workspace. Record the Bot User OAuth Access Token.

Go to Event Subscriptions and enable events. If you already know the URL where your app will be running at, add it now, otherwise leave this for later.

Subscribe the bot user to the message.channels event.

Go to OAuth & Permissions and add the OAuth scope chat:write to the bot token scopes. This will be needed to allow the post to Slack

Yubicloud Setup

Obtain an API key for the Yubicloud and record both the Client ID and the API key itself.

Deploy the Application

Deploy the application to your favorite service. Heroku is a good one and the free tier works fine, there is an example Procfile in the project. Keep in mind that to deploy Rust to Heroku you will need a third-party buildpack.

Edit the configuration file and fill in the Slack bot token, the Slack signing secret, and the Yubicloud Client ID and API key. Those values can also be specified through the following environment variables: YUBOTP_SLACK_BOTTOKEN, YUBOTP_SLACK_SIGNINGSECRET, YUBOTP_OTPVALIDATION_CLIENTID, YUBOTP_OTPVALIDATION_APIKEY.

Now is a good time to also configure the possible replies. The success list is used for valid OTPs, the replayed list is used for replayed OTPs. The messages can contain the special sequence $u which will be replaced with the name of the user who sent the message containing the OTP.

Start the application.

Back to Slack

Go back to the Event Subscriptions page on Slack and add the URL of your application. If you used Heroku it will be something like https://yourchosenname.herokuapp.com. Make sure it successfully verifies.

Everything is now ready. Invite the bot user to a channel and start sending OTPs.

Privacy Concerns

The bot user added to this application very closely resembles a regular Slack user. Specifically this means that the bot user will receive all the messages sent in the channels to which it has been invited. The bot will only react to messages ending with a Yubico OTP.

Depending on the logging level at which the application is running, messages that trigger an OTP validation request towards the Yubicloud can be logged. Make sure you understand the implications and that your threat model considers this acceptable.

The source code can be consulted to verify the above claims.

Build and Development

Install a working Rust toolchain (using rustup is recommended) and simply run cargo build for a debug build or cargo build --release for a release build.
