This could be represented as a Subordinate object in the schema. Each subordinate (probably scope the list of possible types). Could connect to a common zmq socket and broadcast its id and if necessary additional metadata. It could also be a way to request for common metadata like paths.

An obvious case for this integration is recording modalities like fiber phototometry and ephys
