having trouble setting the value of a child

Original question (solved, it was obvious from the QSG): pugixml doesn't work for me
solution: added pugixml.cpp to project's directory.

EDIT:
So I tried a separate test file (again) to figure out why pugixml isn't able to add a value to a child node.

      // 1
      pugi::xml_node status = doc.append_child("status");
      status.set_value("0"); // tried 0 too.
...
      // 2
      pugi::xml_node status = doc.append_child("status");
      status = 0; // tried "0" too.
...
      // 3
      pugi::xml_node status = doc.append_child("status");
      status.value("0"); // tried 0 too.

Output:
(1)

no value set to child status despite it was supposed to.
(2)

(same to string version: error: no match for 'operator=' (operand types are 'pugi::xml_node' and 'const char [2]'))
