I had some trouble to find this out myself, so I'll post it here for whomever it might concern:

MetaWhere development has ceased for a long time. explanation on Ernie's blog
There is a newer gem called Squeel which is the successor to MetaWhere. (With similar syntax, although there are breaking changes)
